Amid recent concerns about the future impact of self-driving cars, the alarming uptick in pedestrian deaths observed across the U.S. is in the news. Through Vision Zero and similar efforts, cities around the world are organizing on this issue by collecting and sharing data, and looking for spatial and temporal patterns.

This map compares locations of non-motorist roadway casualties in daytime versus nighttime in Florida’s metropolitan areas, at the top of the list of most dangerous roadways for pedestrians. Pan and zoom to view the dataset across the rest of the U.S. We created it by extracting data for 2009 to 2017 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's FARS Reporting System. These records were transformed and aggregated in R, loaded into XYZ Hub, and visualized with Tangram and Leaflet.
